This painting is my tribute to George “Buzz” Beurling—Canada’s top fighter ace of WWII, credited with 31 aerial victories. I chose to depict his personal aircraft, Spitfire Mk Vb BR301 (coded UF-S), flying low over the English countryside, just before a mission. The moody atmosphere, muted palette, and layered brushwork reflect the solitude and emotional intensity I imagine pilots like Beurling experienced.
What fascinates me about Beurling is not just his skill—once downing four aircraft in a single day—but his defiant, independent spirit. He often flew alone, relying on uncanny marksmanship and instinctive aerial strategy. That maverick nature earned him both admiration and controversy.
