About the Artist

Bryan Coombes is a Canadian painter based in Langley, British Columbia. Working primarily in oil, his paintings explore the space between observation and interpretation, balancing representational subjects with expressive mark-making and design.

Rather than seeking to reproduce a subject exactly as it appears, Coombes is interested in discovering what remains when the unnecessary is removed. Whether painting wildlife, landscapes, architecture, or machines, his work is guided by the search for an essential visual truth—one that emerges through shape, value, edge, and the language of paint itself.

For Coombes, painting is an act of attention. He is drawn to the moment when a collection of abstract marks unexpectedly resolves into something recognizable and alive. Structure and spontaneity work together in his process, allowing intention and accident to share the surface.

Influenced by both traditional representational painting and contemporary approaches to abstraction, his work explores the idea of emergence: form arising from mass, meaning arising from marks, and perception arising from attention.

Bryan is an artist working from Langley BC and is represented a by galleries located in the Fraser Valley (See Galleries page). He is a signature member of the Artists for Conservation and vice president of the West Fine Art Society. Bryan also enjoys art education. He is a seasoned demo artist for Opus Art Supplies and conducts workshops and weekly drop in classes at his home studio in Langley.
